Single Protocol
Windows networking is unreliable when
more than one protocol is used for File and Printer Sharing,
especially when a computer running Windows XP is involved. An
extra protocol on just one computer can disrupt the entire
network, causing problems such as:
-
Computers and their shared resources
don’t appear in My Network Places or Network Neighborhood.
-
After you click My Network Places, it
takes several minutes for it to open and show the available
network resources.
-
Clicking a computer or a shared disk
or folder gets an error message saying that the network resource
can’t be found.
Examine every computer’s network
settings, and remove all network protocols that you don’t need
for a specific purpose. If you need multiple protocols, such as
TCP/IP for Internet Connection Sharing and NWLink IPX/SPX for
networked games, select one of them for File and Printer
Sharing, and un-bind File and Printer Sharing and Client for
Microsoft Networks from the other protocol on all computers.
