Far Reach Technologies to Launch
Mobile VoIP Service in Eight States Starting Next Year
10-06-2006 - Florida-based Far
Reach Technologies is reportedly gearing up to roll out mobile
VoIP and broadband services in 76 markets in eight states using
xG’s “xMax” wireless technology. According to Far Reach, the
first system launch will occur in March, 2007 in Volusia County,
Fla. – and additional launches are planned for the second
quarter of 2007.
Internet and data services are
expected to follow – and by 2008 the company plans to roll out
an IPTV (News - Alert) service.
xMax is a special RF modulation and
encoding technology which uses individual or “integer”
sinusoidal waves to transmit data. The technology can also be
applied to fixed line networks including copper and coaxial,
however, it is primarily considered a wireless technology used
for delivering 4G mobile services. Because it leverages the
unlicensed ISM band (902-928 MHz), operators employing the
technology do not have to pay for spectrum. xMAX is said to
represent “a fundamental paradigm shift in the way radio signals
are modulated and demodulated.”
xG Technology claims xMax delivers
greater range compared to both cellular and WiMAX – plus it uses
less power. With xMAX, an operator can cover 1,000 square miles
and serve about 30,000 subscribers with a single $50,000 base
station. Just one omnidirectional transmitter located on TV
broadcast tower at a height of 850 feet can deliver signals up
to 20 miles. Broadband speeds average around 10 Mbps throughout
the coverage area.
xG announced in July that it was
launching a development program with regional operators to build
a U.S. wide mobile phone service using xMax handsets with VoIP.
Two manufacturers are now building handsets with xMAX chips.
These phones, which will be branded as xG phones, will deliver
seamless hand-off between xMAX and WiFi (News - Alert) systems.
Calling xG’s technology “the
greatest technical advance in RF communications in 100 years,”
Russ White, president of Far Reach Technologies, said in a press
release that the new mobile VoIP service will deliver “on-demand
broadband services at lower rates, and a path to 4G services in
2008.”
Far Reach’s deployment has been
funded with $100 million by the multi-billion dollar US based
Phoenix Foundation and underwritten by a major UK based bank.
